Well I got lucky for once. I’m typically plagued with the worst luck of anyone on this planet. I caught a break though, and got a phone call I’d dreamed of getting.
Roughly a month ago I posted asking advice on a potential career move. Most of you were eager to say I should do it. I took the steps to apply and made my case on why I deserved the opportunity. A long month has went by, many forms have been signed and submitted and I finally got the call a few days ago.
This means I’ll be relocating to the Dayton/Cincinnati area and starting a new chapter in life. This also means I’ll have to commute 120 miles each way on weekends to get my daughter. The Mirage is the perfect car for this occasion it seems; or is it?
For now it’s going to have to be perfect. Here in some time though, I’ve considered an option and wanted to see if I’m certifiably insane, or I’m the evil genius that I tell myself I am.
Why Pay For Fuel?
The Shitsubishi doesn’t use much of it, but now I’m faced with a work commute for the first time in five years. I’m also faced with long distance commuting for my kiddo. The Mirage eats mileage like no other, but imagine eating the mileage while also being bathed in a cocoon of luxury.
I’ve imagined this automotive utopia and it seems to exist in the way of a CPO Tesla.
This one for example has enhanced auto pilot, the powerful 85 model and roughly 300 miles of range. It’s loaded and is a tick over 50k with an extended 2 year warranty for 100k miles. The price definitely isn’t out of the league by any stretch compared to other cars in this class.
Brakes rarely need replacing thanks to the regenerative braking, and supercharging is free because it’s a CPO. Plus, it’s a fast car with some of the craziest tech out there. I could commute something like this to work and it would cost me approximately nothing.
Much of my family still lives in Tennessee and there are supercharger stations along the route. So I could hit Knoxville Tennessee from my new location, grab a bite to eat while the car “fills up” and be good to go. All while being cradled in luxury. Plus, I do enjoy the way these cars look inside and out.
Obviously the fuel savings wouldn’t come anywhere near offsetting the payment, but it would probably be a decent amount of it, and it would give me a second reliable car behind the trusty Mirage. It would be the perfect road trip car for my lifestyle.
This may happen eventually, and I’d like to know what you all think of this ridiculousness that I call an intelligible plan that I’ve justified to myself through a series of ignorant algorithms.
Aaaaand go.

Aaaannnnnnnd why the fuck not. After all, it's your money.

Hey, if you can afford that kind of change and still have the Mitsu when you need it, why not! We all have automotive preferences and favorites, fulfill yours! :)

I think you’ll be glad you did it. If you can comfortably afford it then I say do it. First off, not paying to “fill up” is so awesome. And depending on the cost of electricity at home you can plug it in overnight so you don’t have to sit at a Supercharger for long. I don’t know the charging time for those, but it’s still nice not having to go and charge it.
Besides that, an electric car is just so damn nice to drive. They’re quiet, I’m sure the Tesla is as quiet as my e-Golf, and one-foot driving is SOO nice, especially when you’re in traffic.

What about a used Hyundai Genenis?
You can get one for like $30k. Remaining $20k can go toward gas, maintenance, insurance AND another car.
The thing is, if you want a Tesla then you want a Tesla. There’s no comp arision because there’s no other electric cars to compare lol
If that's the case, go for it.

Probably would not be worth it, Teslas are expensive and as you said the fuel savings would not be worth the payments in the end. Go for something between the Shitsubishi and a Tesla maybe.

If I know anything about Dayton, you should get an airplane

I really want a 5.0 r-spec....want one so baaaaaaad.

I won’t reside in Dayton myself. They do have the big Wright-Patterson AFB there haha
I’ll live a few cities away and my job will be based there.

That’s a good point as well! Any suggestions?
I want luxury :)

I like the idea of not fueling, seems neat and new to me. The acceleration is nice too.
Luxury is a big ticket hot button for this new purchase. A new Genesis is a solid idea.

That’s kind of my train of thought. Could supercharge it at the end of the week because my commute is just 15mi each way.

It’s a potential possibility. I’m batting around the idea now :)

Trying to see if it’s a remotely intelligent reasoning for it haha.

Now if only somebody would give me a good job so I could get my damn FIAT 126 imported already! :P

I’d say maybe a 3 Series or something like that, luxury and decent MPG.

Oh for some reason I thought you mean 120 miles a day.
If your new commute is only 30 miles a day then a Tesla would definitely be a splurge, but if you can afford, I say go for it. The biggest reason I got an e-Golf was to save on fuel, but I’m still spending around $100 more a month than I was just on fuel for my Mercedes. Although maintenance isn’t cheap for my car, I doubt I will ever reach the break-even point. But, I don’t care. I’m so much happier with a brand new car that it’s worth it to me.
You have to do your own cost-benefit analysis. But figure out logistics before you get the car. I didn’t know I would be able to charge my cars for free before I bought them, but I did figure out how much it would cost at home, and I even figured out how long it would take to recharge them. And I looked at the availability of fast chargers in my area. Do the same thing before you get it so that you’re not learning on the fly.

I’ve considered a new A4 as well
![]() 07/01/2018 at 21:05 |

I would be very happy with one of those haha!
I got very lucky. I really did. It took me a good amount of time to get considered for this position and I’ll definitely always remember the hard work that put me there. I’m so thankful for it. It’s all so surreal at this point. I really legitimately did come from absolutely nothing. The day I started in this industry I had $12 to my name, a stinky ass and bills unpaid lol. I’m so thankful for the people that have pushed me to get to this point. I really am.

I would highly recommend the new A4, with the manual transmission. Suggested the BMW first because there’s a hybrid version if you’re into fuel savings.

I love the thought of an A4 with a manual, they’re so beautiful these days.
I’m huge into BMWs just not a fan of the styling past about 2013 unfortunately.

Same tbh, much more cheap and generic feeling than the Audis.
The A4 with a manual is just a mindfuck, a luxury car with a 6 speed is an increasing rarity. Even back when I had a twin turbo AWD 6 speed Audi sedan in dark green, it was still super rare.

Best of luck friend! Make sure to update us on how things go! :)

If you want a Tesla, get one.
If you want an EV, a Chevy Bolt is a much more economical option.
If neither of those, just get a new manual
GTI
. 30+ mpg highway, the higher trim levels have adjustable suspension and an interior that’s close enough to an Audi for significantly cheaper. Acceleration isn’t as fast as a Tesla, but it’s not a boring either.

I agree. The manual movement is coming to a serious end. Glad Audi still offers the enthusiast option!

Absolutely:) Thanks for following along the journey!

It’s not really about the EV aspect per se. I’m a car nut, ICE is all I know lol. I have a talon that pollutes worse than Exxon and I love the feeling and noise of a good old gas engine.
The Tesla is intriguing because of the luxury and power it offers in one package. Plus the supercharger infrastructure is quite nice to boot.
Funny you say that about the GTI because I’ve considered those too. I’ve always fancied the GTI cars myself.

Yes but this is Oppo.

The new Genesis is even more awesome and luxurious than the older ones :)
You c an’t get any other car where you’re not refueling.

How has reliability been on the new genesis platform?
![]() 07/02/2018 at 22:36 |

I have no personal experience or detailed knowledge of Genesis reliability.
I hear they’re pretty good. Sorry, that about all I know.

No problem at all! Looks like I’ve got research to do. I’ve owned a newer Hyundai a few years ago and it was quite great.
